Then, finally, the usual Christmas Eve arrived. The one without snow, without enchantment, without Santa Claus, and without perfection. Nothing could compare to the Christmas I had experienced in Grimrokk. No gifts were as touching, heartwarming, and tender. I longed to be back, just to be able to experience another moment of the most beautiful evening I had felt, known, seen, even experienced. But I hadn't been able to share it with Will. I almost felt guilty for leaving him out, but it had to be that way. He couldn't share it with me.
Mom and Dad's house was as it usually was during Christmas time: filled to the brim with decorations. The noble fir tree was beautifully adorned, and a multitude of gifts were placed underneath it. Pleasant Christmas music could be heard from the living room, and André, my seven-year-old little brother, sneaked around the tree to see which gifts were intended for him.
The food was good, the gifts were nice, and the company was pleasant, but I wanted nothing else but to go back to Grimrokk. The conversation never turned towards the fertility experiment. It was, in a way, taboo which actually suited me rather well. I often thought about it anyway. When the evening was over and we had returned home, Will and I sat down and we finally had a chance to relax, reflecting on the day that had passed.
It had been a long time since we had the opportunity to just sit and talk about everything and nothing. For once, I could enjoy myself. It was nice. I had never really considered how the situation had affected Will. The problem resided with me, but he felt as if it were just as much his problem. If I couldn't have children, he couldn't have children. That was his logical explanation, and it was not up for discussion. It was as simple and as difficult as that.
I was tired and longed to go back to Grimrokk. In Grimrokk, I could escape the heavy days I experienced in Gaia. Even though they were equally real, I could somehow be a different person without the problems, and all my worries disappeared. Majliv frequently crossed my mind, and I missed him. Strangely enough, I didn't feel guilty towards Will. They were two completely different parts of my life and would never know about each other.
